I have definitely "forgotten" that I had a few items underneath the cart, but I shop at the same place all the time and they take all of my money, so I allow myself a slip-up every now and then.
I love this and I totally hear you. Also, wouldn't it be nice if we all could just shop that way with that much trust in our own instincts about what is fair and everyone knowing that it will all work out in the end? I want to live in that world.
I would never. However, if I did, it would be because it's totally bogus to be making me do a cashier's job without paying me for it. But, I never would.
I don't do it, but find it refreshing to know that others do. Once when I was a young teen shopping with friends at the local mall, I realized the cashier at The Limited had taken off the wrong % discount, so I paid 25 cents instead of whatever it should have been. I took it back in and showed her and she was like "you realize now I have to charge you more now?" like I had done a real dumb thing bringing it back. My friends thought I was crazy. My live-in grandma was one of those "god is watching and he will strike you the &*@! down" type of Catholics. That does a number on a kid and it took a while to get here, but I wouldn't take it back now.
I love this story and I love how different we all are! I remember feeling shamed at about 9 years old by a group of adults who laughed at me when I ran behind them to return a dollar that they had dropped in a movie theater parking lot. I was so embarrassed that I had done it that I can remember it like it was yesterday!

This entry makes me laugh. I would love to hear your honest answers, even if you are answering about "a friend".
