This was a ridiculously awesome way to enjoy the nostalgia of some of my favorite 80s characters. Smell is such an anchor for memories and somehow - despite not having smelled or confirmed how these people actually smelled - just *imagining* how the smelled whipped me deep into the memories and feelings around that time. So rad! Also: that yellow jacket is phenomenal.

This is the best nostalgia meets product I have ever read. (Also makes me wonder if there should be a show called MALLORY bc of course there should be.)

Omg I wish this article was scratch and sniff.

I'm a little late to the comments on this but I am so excited to look for all these smells! I have a love hate relationship to perfume, most of the major label stuff brings on a mini-migraine, but I still love perfume, when it doesn't make me sick. Anyway, posting to say this: It is finally cold where I live, and somehow the perfume that I like in the fall when the leaves are crunchy is reminding me of your "Vicky" writing here. It's called "Kelly Caleche" by Hermes and while I hate luxury handbags I love the idea of a perfume giving leather. It has flowers too which I usually don't like but here I love it, can't get enough of it. I think of your article every morning when I put this on. Would be curious to know if you think it fits what you wrote. And very much looking forward to finding and smelling the one you were actually writing about.

Oh and one more thing - I was obsessed with Issey Miyake Le Feu D'Issey when it was out (it was a round orange bottle). I mentioned it to a woman I met who was really into perfume, she had heard of it in a book she read about perfumes and told me that people are still writing about and pining for it. It's legendary. If you know it, I would so want to read what you'd have to say about it.

Ohh Jean-Claude Ellena is the nose behind Kelly Caleche! I haven’t smelled it but it sounds right up my alley as I love leather and rose and tuberose! And he’s a total legend. And many people are still obsessed Issey Miyake!

PS Never too late to the comments, Jane. So glad you're here - fashionably late even!

Bring back “sassy” perfume! I keep trying to find something similar to it and can’t!

Picture a teal (that particular blue-green teal was huge in the 1980's ) suede fringe jacket (with relatively light shoulderpads ) exactly like that yellow one.

My mom got it for me. It was the only thing we bought that day because we were headed to my grandmother's and she was so mad she didn't shop for herself because we were arguing over "How many times are you really going to wear a teal jacket with fringe?"

So, when we got hit with a huge bill, they figured out that it was the clerk, who used the numbers off the card (this was the 80's, it was a store brand card) and bought several more items of clothing for herself.

I still have the jacket. It's awesome. If you twist back and forth, the fringe sounds like windshield wipers: fwump-fwump!" I'd wear it more but it's almost never cold enough to wear and it inevitably rains during the three months that it is cold in Central Florida.

I love this story. I can see the jacket. How lucky you are that you still have it!
