Jane's Phone: Vanessa Is On A Mission
I've gotten some flack through the years about the lengths that I encourage writers to go to to experience things that they can share with you so that you can live vicariously, and then either do them yourselves or never ever even consider them. (Examples: my fashion editor Eric having sex with a woman for the first and only time; my writer Gigi joining a convent; another editor joining a bodybuilding competition, becoming a Hawaiian tropic model, AND posing for Playboy; Esther, who still works with me now at AJPT, can reveal the things she tried at Jane magazine here too, if she likes.) And I may continue to get that flack because I just love when people - myself included – try something bold or scary or new or something we all think we know about but have never actually done ourselves, and tell you exactly all the details of what it is really like.
Oh my God, while trying to describe that, I just remembered that Girls, the TV show, did a parody of me where I was instructing writers to cover topics "out of their comfort zones" and telling them "that's where the magic happens.” I wouldn't have said that thing about the magic, but overall, the parody was not far off.
Anyway, Vanessa is right now in the middle of trying something out for you guys that I'm dying to hear about the outcome of and she's planning to post it here tomorrow morning, so we all can learn together. And then we can applaud her for doing it so that we don't have to, or we can get inspired to do something like it ourselves.
I sure appreciate you all! Now I have to go find another plane to jump out of or something newer than that for myself. I love this shit.
