I am super curious how many of you are doing the lights out Meta thing where we all log off all Meta platforms for a week. Are any of you? I'll come back here and put a link if you don't know what the hell I'm talking about.
Second question is that we are launching a program in the next week or so involving giving our profits to a couple of causes. I've isolated two that I think are in need of support and are strongly aligned with what we care about and want to change. But these gifts are from all of us, our whole AJPT community, so I would love for you all to weigh in here and elsewhere, telling me which causes you would like us to be supporting, financially and otherwise, starting after this inauguration (which Charlie managed to be so much more upbeat about here than I've been - thanks, Charlie!).
Who's logging off meta?
Causes you want AJPT specifically to donate to? Let me know if you like. Thank you!
I’m logged off! I quit Facebook i’m 2016. Logged off IG today for the week - maybe longer. Really need to reassess my relationship to social media - but mostly despise to tech-bro culture oligarchy taking over this country. Plan on reading more and engaging in real life relationships.
As far as nonprofits - support for Dreamers, legal aid for immigrants.
Thank you so much for the great suggestion, Anna - I'm adding it to the list. I'm also proud of you for doing the Meta log off! And happy that we can still talk here.
As much as the no fact checking horrifies me, I don’t have the mental bandwidth to keep constantly changing or not using platforms with every news story or upheaval. Every platform, including this one, is problematic in some way so I just try to put forth posts and information that is heartfelt and useful and hope it reaches likeminded people.
I like Yellowhammer Fund, a “501(c)3 abortion advocacy and reproductive justice organization serving Alabama, Mississippi, and the Deep South.” https://www.yellowhammerfund.org
I’m doing it! I had quit Facebook years ago and will do so again and logging of IG for the week. Though with so many remembrances posted on IG for David Lynch (hope you’re still connected to the moon, David) the feed has been absolutely magical for the last few days.
I did and it’s interesting to ride the self-awareness train and feel all the withdrawals. I’ve gotten a lot done for my side hustle as well as work for the community radio station I volunteer for (WVMO in Monona, WI).
"Empathy is no longer in power." It's not at the highest level of power right now, but your article highlights all the ways we can keep empathy in power across the masses. 💜
Charlie dear, I totally understand the need for positivity. However, it's just a little too early for me. I think that as citizens of these "yet to be United States", (James Baldwin), we need time to mourn. I fear that we go to the quick fix much too fast. It's so "American" to want to sing "Hallelujah, come on get happy..." I do not believe in slogans like SoCal Strong either. Lord have mercy. The fires just happened and we're supposed to be strong?! I am taking this time to reflect on how I can keep mentally healthy and be a more responsible world citizen. Keep writing, Charlie. You have a good heart.
Jane dear, I wasn't on FB a lot, but both my husband and I deleted or accounts today. Regarding causes, the big ones are immigration and protecting trans members of our communities.
Wishing you both peace and warmth in these times. <3
The same author is a human rights lawyer and donated his time to an organization called Humanity First. They were in La to help people file claims, know their rights, etc. he even describes one case where an undocumented woman’s landlord filed a claim in her name so they helped file a fraud complaint against him. There are good people and organizations out there! Thanks for turning the focus on them!

That's so sweet and the nice side of those platforms, huh? Proud of you for doing it!

Logged off Meta!
Good for you!
I deactivated both on Monday and think I may continue indefinitely. I’m finding this platform to be better for my mental health.

Yes yes yes, the Midst!

Thanks for the ideas and the feedback - so much. It all means a lot and I'm looking into support for both of those causes.
Thank you for the positive spin Charlie! Here’s a very good article with some action items re mass deportations https://open.substack.com/pub/qasimrashid/p/trumps-mass-anti-immigrant-raids?r=32tx6u&utm_medium=ios

Right here with you through the cringing and the howling and the anger - that will hopefully become something actionable and positive for all of us.
Well said. Thank you.
