I think you're absolutely right on both counts, Ellen. At the very least, a reasonable effort seems warranted to ward off future guilt if nothing else. The fact that this person didn't is probably why it is an anonymous confession - that and the fact that they're likely not telling the girlfriend they didn't buy it.
I wonder how many other people besides me read these anonymous confessions every day and realize that we have either done the same things themselves or could absolutely imagine doing each one. Hmmm. I have mixed feelings about this one (though no judgment ever). If she will genuinely like the ring, then why not?
